countertransference

Definition:

Countertransference refers to the emotional responses and projections of the therapist toward the patient, often arising from the therapist’s own unconscious material. It reflects both personal reactions and the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship.

Example:

Recognising countertransference allows the therapist to maintain objectivity and use their emotional responses as a tool to understand the patient’s unconscious processes. For example, a therapist feeling inexplicable frustration may uncover the patient’s repressed anger.
